Susan Stewart
I have been interested in art and crafts since I was about 10 years old. I still have a line drawing I drew of my mom when I was 10. While living in Montana, my 7th grade art instructor was a photo realist oil painter and I was awarded a scholarship to go to the University of Kansas for the summer.
I think his influence is why I have a tendency towards realism and detail even when I try to start looser. My love of math and being an electrical design engineer for many years might have something to do with that also. I have tried various forms of art over the years but watercolor painting is what stuck after taking two watercolor classes at the Port Townsend School of Arts in 2016. Initially I was drawn to animals, I love how they come to life as I draw or paint. Now, however, I paint many different types of subject matter, it is always fun challenging myself, and I enjoy doing commissions because I can then paint what someone else really wants, giving me a sense of accomplishment.
