Pieter VanZanden, a Northwest modern-garbage artist who works primarily in sculpture is driven by his experiences growing up on Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound…fishing, hiking, biking, and making driftwood forts and rafts. Pieter spent his 20’s & 30’s traveling, living in the mountains, skateboarding, snowboarding and working as a carpenter. His extensive construction skills help him to create art out of any media. Pieter works with stone, metal, plastic, wires, roofing, old tools, nuts, bolts, recycled keys,
sometimes organics, lumber strapping, construction garbage piles, ceramics, epoxy, fiberglass, paper,
ink, watercolor, oil. VanZanden’s work is influenced by the changes in the environment caused by
technology, pollution, and government parameters and anything that might cause an apocalyptic event.
He also likes to do pop culture for fun (it’s becoming our history) and enjoys studying the surrounding
nature for his multimedia projects.
